Among numerous factors contributing to medical progress, an important role is assigned to perfection of the system of continued medical education and training of the personnel for high qualification. In the 1990s, the Georgian Medical Postgraduate foundation was established in Tbilisi, Georgia (Dr. Dm. Tvildiani), which enrolled over 200 young physicians aimed at passing the US Medical Licensing Examination(operating in more than 80 countries) with subsequent completion of medical residency program in the USA or other countries. The foundation effectively provided the members with all necessary programs, textbooks and other aids. However, it turned out next to impossible to master the program independently, with only few students being able to pass. This caused an urgent need to found a special, radically new school of higher medical education.

In1992/1993, the AIETI Medical School started functioning under the patronage of Acad. David Tvildiani and Dr. Dimitri Tvildiani. It is one of the first non-governmental higher medical education institutions in Georgia.  Since 2011 AIETI Medical School was renamed after the academician David Tvildiani in David Tvildiani Medical University. The university has one faculty - the Faculty of General Medicine. The duration of the educational process lasts for 6 years. It consists of three stages: Basic Medical Science (2.5 years), Clinical Science (2.5 years), Pre-diploma Specialization (Clinical Clerkship - one year). The curriculum consists of single cycles each concluded by a test which affects the final results obtained in a given discipline. The duration of an academic year makes up 40 weeks (2 semesters). The end   of year examination is conducted in the form of test according to the quotas in all the subjects taken within the year.

The quality of students knowledge is checked using the original self-designed computer-based assessment program including the complicacy number test questions. Learning of Basic Medical disciplines is system-oriented, while that of Clinical Medical Disciplines is Problem and System - oriented. According to the results of the course examination a student may have the fee discount. The final score is also influenced by the results of oral examinations taken throughout the year. Selection examinations are conducted for AIETI`s students and graduates aimed to pass the USMLE Steps. A student has to obtain the threshold exceeding score to be admitted as a candidate for the USMLE financed by the School.

AIETI is included into the WHO AVICENNA Directory for medicine, it is a member of the Association for Medical Education in Europe (AMEE), Association of Medical Schools in Europe (AMSE) and Organization for PhD Education in Biomedicine and Health Sciences in the European System (ORPHEUS).

A large number of the graduates have already completed or are currently doing the residency or other proficiency courses, working as physicians in prominent USA and European Universities and Clinics.The absolute majority of the graduates have been employed in the professional field, while many more successfully passed the international exams (USMLE, PLAB, MCI) and are currently developing their skills at clinics and research centers of the USA, Germany, Britain, Sweden and other countries. A number of the graduates have returned to the School as efficient teachers. Some have earned their PhD degree.

Mission

The Mission of the AIETI Medical School is to provide scientifically-oriented Higher Medical Education based on the best international experience.

In ensuring the accomplishment of the mission we are guided by the following principles as to:

-          Continuously improve teaching, learning ,research and management quality;

-          Implement the potential/ resource/ of the academic staff and students;

-          Foster the establishment of optimal education and research environment;

-       Intensify the role  of  the Medical School in the field of medicine at national, regional and  international levels;

-          Contribute to the formation of highly-educated society.

The following Objectives are set by the Medical School in order to accomplish its mission:

-          Refinement of curriculums by permanent revising syllabuses, methods and the model of teaching;

-          Determination and implementation by Quality Assurance Office estimation criteria to enable the monitoring of teaching quality;

-          Enhancement of learning and scientific informational database;

-          Promotion of students enrollment and participation in Medical Schools live;

-          Promotion of the academic staff for advanced training courses;

-          Promotion of innovatory teaching methods testing and implementation;

-          Elaboration of new curriculums according to the current needs of the medical field.

The following Tasks should be accomplished in order to achieve the objectives listed above:

-          Identification of the minimal requirements necessary for a student to meet in order to get a positive estimation;

-          Progressive transition to the integrated curriculum by means of a stepwise implementation of its special components;

-          Research skills and abilities training within the undergraduate program and organization of annual scientific conferences;

-          Contribution to advanced training courses for the academic staff;

-          Effective application of the informational e-bases and e-methodologies be means of the Education and Assessment Computer Support Center;

-          Continuous update and renovation of e-bases and librarys fund of the medical scientific and educational information;

-          Facilitate an organization and management of the education process through the Educational Process On-line Information Service;

-          Every student is provided with the on-line electronic version of his/her own students record book containing test results. The information is confidential and access to it is allowed after an authorization;

-          All information needed for students, academic staff, officials and visitors is placed on Medical Schools web-site;

-          MedicalSchool provides a transparent choice of the elective subjects and some clinical hospitals within Georgia as well as abroad.

The Daphne Hare Medical Library, an organic component of the educational process at the Medical School `AIETI` was established in 1995 based on the generous donation from USA libraries, organized by the late Dr. Daphne Hare.

The library contains over 5000 volumes representing almost all branches of medicine, the top place being occupied by up-to-date medical textbooks, manuals, guides, audio-video aids, which serve as, an integral part of the school academic curricula.

Computers provide quick access to every book or any other item kept within the library funds.

This collection, popular with the medical professionals in Georgia, is open to everyone who seeks to acquire knowledge in medical field. 

Welcome to the School of Public Health at the David Tvildiani Medical University. The School offers postgraduate education, community practicum experience, and research training to develop your capabilities and address the growing need for a proficient public health workforce in Georgia.

The School of Public Health is a new institution formed under the David Tvildiani Medical University Rectors Decree N1200 on 24 October 2009. It builds on the existing PhD in Public Health programme. It offers a wide range of study subjects including biostatistics, environmental health, nutrition, occupation health, epidemiology, social and behavioral sciences, and health systems. Our faculty expertise is diverse and we have strong collaborative links with Georgian and international partners that enrich our training, support research projects, and offer opportunities for graduate placements and research experience.

Our mission is to advance public health knowledge through learning, research, service, and to promote health equity by generating knowledge and translating evidence based research into policy and action. We aim to challenge societal problems of social and environmental justice, health disparities, and unhealthy lifestyles.

More specifically the school 

1.       Prepares the next generation of scholars and public health managers with a learner centered  education rich of the latest public health approaches;

 

2.       Supports interdisciplinary research that feeds into the design, implementation and evaluation of behavioral and functional interventions that address health disparities.

3.       Informs public policy, disseminate health information, and increases awareness of public health concerns through disease surveillance, needs assessments, and program evaluation.
